Before proposing to someone, one should always research which is the ring finger when in doubt. This is what we were taught when we were growing up. It is an important lesson for us to learn which finger and hand it is before you make a blunder. And no, if the ring is too big, one should always re-size it. Wearing the engagement ring on another finger just loses the meaning altogether.
