Last night, Mr Washy didn't have any ginger at home to make his cup of tea. Of course! How could we trust Mr Washy to have any fresh ginger at home. If you do not have fresh ginger, substituting it with ground ginger isn't a bad idea. In the end, he made spiced up his earl grey tea with some ground ginger, cinnamon and pepper, along with some sugar. Sounds good to us.
Ground ginger root powder has an extremely sharp, spicy, hot, and even mildly fruity flavor. Usually high quality ground ginger powder can easily be substitute for freshly grated ginger by substituting 1/8 teaspoon of finely ground ginger powder for every tablespoon of fresh ginger called for in a recipe. Powder ginger has a much longer shelf life than the fresh version, but with the same flavor and aroma quality.
We found this website, Relaxing Herbal Tea, with some really good recipes for spiced teas. We really like the sound of that spicy green tea below.
In medium saucepan, heat the water and milk until they JUST begin to gently boil. Stir in the remaining ingredients. Reduce heat to low and simmer for about 3 minutes. Remove tea bags and strain, then serve.

SPICY GREEN TEA
Green tea is not only good for you, but if you use soy milk (I like the vanilla soy) it gives it that extra boost of goodness. Try this in the morning!
INGREDIENTS:- 1 cup milk (soy milk will work well too)
- 1 cup water
- 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. ground ginger
- 2 green tea bags
In medium saucepan, heat the water and milk until they JUST begin to gently boil. Stir in the remaining ingredients. Reduce heat to low and simmer for about 3 minutes. Remove tea bags and strain, then serve.
