The Name of the Rose is a novel by Italian author Umberto Eco. It is a historical whodunnit (murder mystery) set in an Italianmonastery in the year 1327, an intellectual mystery combining semiotics in fiction, biblical analysis, medieval studies and literary theory. First published in Italian in 1980 under the title Il nome della rosa, it appeared in 1983 in an English translation by William Weaver.
The Name of the Rose was made into a film in 1986, directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud and starring Sean Connery as William of Baskerville and Christian Slateras Adso.
In the movie, a monk was found dead in a bathtub filled with lime leaves. He was poisoned before and was using lime leaves in a bath to relieve his pain. Interesting.
