Let's make living globes!- Find an empty glass or plastic jar.
- Make a funnel using a piece of paper. This helps to keep the glass clean.
- Line the bottom with charcoal. This will help drain the water so that the roots of the plants will not rot. Charcoal helps to absorb excess water. The absorbed water will be returned to the "atmosphere" when it evaporates.
- We put some coffee beans on tops of the charcoal. We dug up some soil from the garden which contains dead roots, bacteria and other stuff we don't know. The coffee beans will keep away pests and also provide nutrients. If you have a shallow jar, the beans can help with the drainage too.
- Pour in the soil and start planting. Chopsticks help.
- We collected wild plants for the terrarium. We like the moos which will make it look like a little garden.
- Since there is already moisture in the soil, just pour a little water and enclose. In the next few hours or days, you will see moisture in the jar. You will know when you have watered too much when the jar gets misty. open it for a day or 2 and enclose again.
- Enjoy and water a little every few weeks to a couple of months. If you water too much, the plants will also grow too quickly.

where do you get the charcoal is it like aquarium stuff?
where did you get your plants? did you plant seeds or seedlings?
The charcoal can be purchased from the gardener. We got the plants from corners of gardens and seedlings. These are plants that grew very wild.
Great idea... I like it! Just wondering, would regular BBQing charcoal work? Or do I need a special/different charcoal?
It is about the same, bbq charcoal or bamboo charcoal. Although, some people say that bbq charcoal will get mould. But I think it is the same.
wow thanks for sharing this, i've been wanting to try it out since i saw a shop on etsy selling moss terrariums. i would buy one, if i wasn't so broke.. but i guess it is more fun to make my own anyway:D i did try to steal some moss from the forest and make it grow at home, but i think i'll have more luck with these instructions. moss is too cooL!

hmm, could one perhaps replace crushed charcoal briquettes? i do not seem to have any charcoal on hand
Do not use bbq charcoal - totally different item from aquarium/terrarium charcoal!
