When the mac was down, we really needed to get in touch with the world. Being desperate usually makes one more resourceful. There is still broadband at home, there just isn't a decent device. We have always only used our mobile phone to make calls and send smses, but there is a web capability on most phones these days. We got connected, somehow, finally, and installed fring. Some friends have been using fring to chat online and this create an automatic extension next to their nick, i.e., fidgetyfingers (on mobile via fring), or at least something like that.
