LIFE IS A JOURNEY, ARE YOU READY?

BROWN RICE SUSHI IS SO WTF

We told a friend online that we are going to make sushi today. She said she loves sushi but would only order brown rice sushi. WTF! What is that? We have never heard of that. It must be one of those wrong health freakish inventions. It is so wrong. Try to sell that in Japan and we will not make a single cent, ok maybe from the western tourists.

We needed to know what people say about it. Here are some comments. Brilliant!

My cafeteria is serving sushi with brown rice.  Anyone else offended?

That's about as offensive as low-fat ice cream, "I can't believe it's not butter", and fake "maple" syrup.

why is this offensive? (I don't know offhand the nutritional differences between white and brown rice, sadly.)

I guess it's offensive because it's not authentic

I think it's fine if it's California rolls in your cafeteria or Whole Foods or something.  I'd blanch if they had it at say, Sushi Yasuda.

I'm offended that you're not having sashimi.

1/16/2008 Kate "not yet published" K. says:

Brown rice is supposed to be better for you--less processed, more fiber & bran. I thought there was nothing wrong with it until I tasted it in sushi. It just doesn't work for me.

1/16/2008 Kate "the present king of france" T. says:

taste-wise, it is a poor match for sushi. In general, though, healthy is good, right?

Not offended at all. It's an acquired taste. I've tried it and it's not bad (I've asked for it at Sharaku a few times).  Does it justify the extra cost? Naa.

i like brown rice in general. however, like Kate K. has mentioned- which its health benefits make it great... the TASTE of brown rice and sushi... is EH and kind of gross/slimy. all the ones i've had at Whole Foods were slimy/cold and funky. i'd just stick to sashimi, yo.

I like the brown rice and sushi. Had it at Aja and not half-bad. Only comment is that it crumbles a bit more in the soy sauce than white rice, but I think it tastes just fine and definitely a healthier option.

Side note... I can see it being odd if they *only* have the brown rice version available.

Hiroshi does brown rice too, and I like it... sometimes. A Salmon Avocado roll in brown rice is pretty yummy actually, but yellowtail and scallion... stick to the white rice.

It really comes down to how well the place seasons it's rice, which has always been a big sushi factor with me.

If they're trying to be "healthy" why not just go all out and use oatmeal instead of brown rice.

Brown rice sushi grosses me out almost as much as whole wheat pasta does.

Whole wheat pasta is good once you get used to it. I find that if you mix half regular pasta and half whole wheat and then keep changing the ratio to more whole wheat you will get used to it... also cook it a little longer, it seems to take al dente to a whole new level otherwise.

I think Mario Batali once said that he would rather gouge out his eyes with a melon baller and put his left scrotal sack through a pasta roller then eat whole wheat pasta again.
