We told a friend online that we are going to make sushi today. She said she loves sushi but would only order brown rice sushi. WTF! What is that? We have never heard of that. It must be one of those wrong health freakish inventions. It is so wrong. Try to sell that in Japan and we will not make a single cent, ok maybe from the western tourists.
We needed to know what people say about it. Here are some comments. Brilliant!
SUSHI WITH BROWN RICE
1/16/2008 Sherman E. says:
My cafeteria is serving sushi with brown rice. Anyone else offended?
1/16/2008 Chris "The Royal We" H. says:
That's about as offensive as low-fat ice cream, "I can't believe it's not butter", and fake "maple" syrup.
1/16/2008 Hootie H. says:
i'm offended that you are offended. i love it.
i also love low fat ice cream. so shoot me! 1/16/2008 Caroline A. says:
I love it too. I love low fat ice cream too. Go Skinny Cow!
1/16/2008 Fabian T. says:
I'm offended that you're not having sashimi.
1/16/2008 Kate "not yet published" K. says:
Brown rice is supposed to be better for you--less processed, more fiber & bran. I thought there was nothing wrong with it until I tasted it in sushi. It just doesn't work for me.
1/16/2008 Peter K. says:
Not offended at all. It's an acquired taste. I've tried it and it's not bad (I've asked for it at Sharaku a few times). Does it justify the extra cost? Naa.
1/16/2008 Joolie "mzjoolz if you're nasty!" T. says:
i like brown rice in general. however, like Kate K. has mentioned- which its health benefits make it great... the TASTE of brown rice and sushi... is EH and kind of gross/slimy. all the ones i've had at Whole Foods were slimy/cold and funky. i'd just stick to sashimi, yo.
1/16/2008 Lara "Anti-Beer" R. says:
I like the brown rice and sushi. Had it at Aja and not half-bad. Only comment is that it crumbles a bit more in the soy sauce than white rice, but I think it tastes just fine and definitely a healthier option.
1/16/2008 Lara "Anti-Beer" R. says:
Side note... I can see it being odd if they *only* have the brown rice version available.
1/16/2008 Erica "It's shake n bake and I helped!" P. says:
Hiroshi does brown rice too, and I like it... sometimes. A Salmon Avocado roll in brown rice is pretty yummy actually, but yellowtail and scallion... stick to the white rice.
It really comes down to how well the place seasons it's rice, which has always been a big sushi factor with me. 1/16/2008 Steve "10 Lemon" M. says:
If they're trying to be "healthy" why not just go all out and use oatmeal instead of brown rice.
Brown rice sushi grosses me out almost as much as whole wheat pasta does. 1/16/2008 Erica "It's shake n bake and I helped!" P. says:
Whole wheat pasta is good once you get used to it. I find that if you mix half regular pasta and half whole wheat and then keep changing the ratio to more whole wheat you will get used to it... also cook it a little longer, it seems to take al dente to a whole new level otherwise.
1/16/2008 Chris "The Royal We" H. says:
I think Mario Batali once said that he would rather gouge out his eyes with a melon baller and put his left scrotal sack through a pasta roller then eat whole wheat pasta again.
